Cappella Andrea Barca
Sir András Schiff conductor and pianist
Mozart – Concerto n. 15 in si bemolle maggiore K 450
– Sinfonia n. 39 in mi bemolle maggiore K 543
– Concerto n. 17 in sol maggiore K 453
András Schiff has long been one of our Society’s best friends. He has performed as soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles, but this time he comes to us in a new, double role, as soloist and conductor. For the first time in Milan he will conduct the Cappella Andrea Barca, a group that he founded in 1999 and that specialises in repertoire from Johann Sebastian Bach to the Viennese classics (Haydn and Mozart), with an extension into the work of Schiff’s twentieth-century compatriot, Bartók. Since its founding, the Cappella Andrea Barca (the Italian translation of András Schiff) has performed at Vicenza’s Teatro Olimpico during the festival dedicated to Palladio that is organised by the Società del Quartetto di Vicenza. We will enjoy hearing Schiff play the two most important Mozart piano concerti among those that precede the greatest ones of all (from K. 466 onward). But perhaps we will be even more fascinated to see him step onto the podium to conduct the first (K. 543) of the composer’s three last and most beautiful symphonies.
