Not much more than a year has gone by since his previous Quartetto concert (February 2018), but re-encountering him right away is both a pleasure and a necessity. The talent of Jan Lisiecki, 24 years old, exploded when he was an adolescent (Deutsche Grammophon signed him to a sensational exclusive contract when he was 15), and his international fame is already consolidated through more than 100 concerts a year. He studies constantly: “I train continuously, like an athlete aiming for Olympic gold,” he says. Born in Canada to Polish parents, he became known in Italy in 2013 when Antonio Pappano and then Claudio Abbado invited him to replace, suddenly, an ailing Martha Argerich. Chopin remains Lisiecki’s household god, and in 2010 he had the honour of recording his piano concerti in the composer’s birth-house, In this programme, Chopin alternates expressively and lightly with composers who were his predecessors, contemporaries, and successors.
