Founded in 2002, the Maurice Quartet was nurtured by a prestigious talent laboratory – the Accademia del Quartetto di Fiesole – where it worked with some of the most significant masters in the world of chamber music: Hatto Beyerle of the Alban Berg Quartet, György and Marta Kurtág, Andreas Keller, and Piero Farulli. The Maurice studied with the Ysaÿe Quartet at the Paris Conservatoire and deepened its work on contemporary repertoire with the Arditti, Prometeo, Diotima and Pražák quartets and with the composer Helmut Lachenmann. From the beginning, the four musicians demonstrated an awareness of the necessity to bring contemporary music to the fore, to such an extent that it became the group’s raison d’être. Thus the Maurice’s repertoire takes twentieth century classics as a point of departure and reaches forward to our contemporaries, some of whom have written and dedicated their works to this ensemble. The Maurice Quartet is in demand at the most prestigious contemporary music series and festivals in Italy and abroad and participates in the “Le Dimore del Quartetto” project.
