The Teatro Franco Parenti and the Società del Quartetto, in close collaboration, are proposing a new musical offering for a broader public than the one that usually attends concerts.

Greatly desired by Ilaria Borletti Buitoni and Andrée Ruth Shammah, this series is planned as an extraordinary voyage with eight different stops, entrusted to eleven pianists from all over the world. The route – conceived by Gianni Morelenbaum Gualberto – crosses geographic, stylistic and temporal borders, through many languages and amalgamations, in order to make the acquaintance of many highly fascinating, complex, extraordinarily varied and lively worlds, with much fun and levity along the way. It follows the development of extra-European academic musical culture, especially those of the Americas, from the twentieth century to our own day.

Vijay Iyer, the internationally recognised recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant, is an avid investigator of music and its various communities, procedures, histories and theories. He thoroughly explores rhythmic, melodic and structural elements, drawing upon a vast array of sources and arriving at a type of music for soloist or ensemble that is always variegated and guided by improvisation. His is a highly personal mix of jazz, new music and Indian elements.

Contemporary virtuosity: VANESSA WAGNER presents tomorrow’s music today

Vanessa Wagner puts her well-known virtuosity at the service of composers who have positioned themselves on the border between academic language and the richness of the vernacular languages that various amalgamations and crossovers disseminated during the twentieth century: Michael Nyman’s cinematographic leanings; the distant, poetic Baltic world of Peteris Vasks; Hans Otte’s hypnotic sounds; Meredith Monk’s enchanting side; Moondog’s enthralling shamanism; the romantic European minimalism of Wim Mertens; and the hieratic encounter between the academic language and the electric improvisational energy of Bryce Dessner.

From Scott Joplin onward: YONATHAN AVISHAI explores the roots of twentieth-century popular music.

Avishai, a refined piano virtuoso whose talent was brought highlighted in a recent series of recordings for the prestigious ECM label, presents a programme based on the roots of the New World’s popular music by well-known composers: the legendary Scott Joplin’s rags and the Brazilian tangos of Ernesto Nazareth, a composer who inspired artists of the calibre of Darius Milhaud and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

In her spectacular, fascinating manner, Lisa Moore demonstrates the ongoing bonds between music and image and between music and theatrical happenings that have characterised much contemporary output in compositions not only by Philip Glass, John Adams and David Lang (with the valuable contribution of a video by Isabel dos Santos), but also by young but already established female composers, such as the American Missy Mazzoli, the Australian Kate Neal (who makes use of fascinating animations by an artist of the calibre of Sal Cooper) and Mayke Nas of the Netherlands.

Timo Andres, a composer and pianist of unusual expressive and technical gifts, takes us into the heart of the new music of our day. Thanks to a rich, fertile imagination that makes him capable of dialoguing with audiences, Andres is an artist who knows no linguistic boundaries or preconceived positions. He isn’t afraid of using tonality in different ways but without turning his back on rhythmic and melodic richness. Philip Glass, John Adams and Nico Muhly stand side by side with such European composers as Louis Andriessen and Donnacha Dennehy and with one of the fathers of American music, Aaron Copland.  Not to mention music by composers like Robin Holcomb, Gabriella Smith, Brad Mehidau (well known as a jazz musician) and Frederic Rzewski (famed for his monumental Variations on El Pueblo Unido Jamás Será Vencido), who have managed to straddle the crossroads between cultures and styles.

From Spain to Mexico: the spirit-like SIMON GHRAICHY reveals Latin American music

Simon Ghraichy symbolically and even physically represents the spirit of this series: he was born in France; his origins are Lebanese and Mexican; he spent his childhood in Canada; and he studied music in Paris and Helsinki. His fascinating programme explores the Hispanic roots of music in the New World. Taking as his point of departure such well-known compositions of Albéniz as Astúrias, Málaga, Jerez and Eritaña, the pianist then proceeds to the virtuosic, post-Lisztian Cuba of Ernesto Lecuona’s Afro-Cuban dances and moves on to the Caribbean rhythms of Puerto Rico as they were immortalised by the original composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. And he finishes up with the imaginative, highly coloured Mexico of Arturo Márquez.

Jason Moran – jazz composer, pianist and artist – opens a window on improvised music which, starting with jazz, became one of the main expressive vehicles of the American musical tradition by assimilating a multiplicity of materials, from academic structures to the echoes of popular song to the rhythms that the New World extracted from many and varied traditions.

Our trip comes to an end with a festive, engaging celebration of jazz and of one of its prophets: Charlie Parker, the legendary saxophonist who was one of the fathers of be-bop and one of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century. The centenary of his birth falls in 2020.

Four of the most admired pianist protagonists of today’s international improvisation scene – Dado Moroni, Aaron Goldberg, Danny Grissett and Emmet Cohen – take turns playing with two, four and even eight hands, on two pianos, to remind us of one of the musical languages that changed twentieth-century history. Because, as Egon Schiele said, Art can’t be modern; Art belongs to eternity.
