“American crossbreeding: the roots of twentieth-century popular music”
Yonathan Avishai interprets and discusses:
Scott Joplin | Ernesto Nazareth | Ernesto Lecuona | George Gershwin | Cole Porter
(Detailed programme to be announced)
Yonathan Avishai is one of the most significant pianists to have emerged on the lively Israeli scene. Transplanted to France, he became an artist for ECM, which looks after him in a special way. Avishai has recently become particularly interested in the relationship between twentieth-century popular music and its roots in some types of academic music of the Americas – Gottschalk, Lecuona, Ernesto Nazareth and Broadway composers – and he has created a recital that is intellectually lively but also poetic and engaging.
